A ‘Down Under’ Segway Experience

In the Brisbane area, Ray Carson and his team provide a flurry of activities using Segway Personal Transporters (PTs) to keep visitors on their toes two feet.
Ray uses a fabricated plane fuselage as the cargo hold for the 12 Segway x2’s at his adventure and survival training tours that include a GPS navigational challenge. He estimates approximately 25,000 people will have visited the tour this year, with more expected next year. You can see from the smiles below that it’s a great time.

Ray’s team also facilitates ‘adult day care groups’ with a local company that specializes in corporate training events and off-sites. Including multiple outdoor venues, catering, and team-building activities for up to 150 people, the service plans to incorporate Segway tours as an available option. Not bad for a day at work, huh?
And lastly, there’s a Segway vineyard tour in the works in Brisbane if you’re planning to visit. Chock-full of small, local vineyards, we doubt the experience will disappoint.

Summer 2009: The Un-Road Trip
Boaz Frankel stopped by Segway Inc. last week to start his Segway PT leg of his Un-Road Trip, a car-free journey across America. Already having traveled more than 6,000 miles using about 60 different modes of transportation, he continued his journey gliding from Manchester, NH to Concord, NH on a Segway i2.

Traversing the varied terrain and taking in the beautiful scenery of Bedford, Manchester, Goffstown, Bow and finally Concord, he managed to utilize every last bit of his lithium ion batteries for a full 26 miles! An i2 record, perhaps?

Congrats Colorado!
Just a few days ago, Colorado became the 45th state to adopt EPAMD (Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device) legislation, effectively establishing that Segway Personal Transporters (PTs) and other low-powered, motorized vehicles are allowed for use on sidewalks, bike lanes and roadways where the speed limit does not exceed 30mph/48kph.
Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signed HB1026, officially titled “AN ACT Concerning Low-Powered Vehicles And Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices” into law on Thursday, May 28th. The bill establishes the EPAMD definition under the Colorado Revised Statutes and allows for their use on the aforementioned byways. There is no helmet requirement; however, the use of lights is required if used during evening hours.
Matt Dailida, Director, Government Affairs at Segway Inc. said, “Coloradoan’s have long shown a strong desire to adopt green technologies within their lifestyles. Passage of HB1026 is a critical piece in building an environment of support for zero emission vehicles including the Segway PT and I applaud both the Legislature and Governor Ritter for their support.”
We recommend that you check with your local officials regarding new or existing regulations in your area before riding; some areas in Colorado may define acceptable roadways a bit differently than the newly-signed bill does. A first look: “Segway Circuit” within Wii Fit Plus
We ventured on over to the huge Nintendo set-up on the E3 Expo floor to check out people giving “Segway Circuit” a go for the first time within the newly announced Wii Fit Plus.

Live from the Nintendo Media Event at E3 Expo!
We’re here in cloudy Los Angeles at the Nokia Theater (pic above is the overflow room for the live media event) to celebrate Nintendo’s announcement of the Wii Fit Plus. Among other exciting news from the company such as an improved precision control Wii Remote called MotionPlus, a vitality sensor that can monitor your pulse, and cool new titles such as Wii Sports Resort and Super Mario Bros Wii, Wii Fit Plus has some great improvements over the original Wii Fit.
But how big is Nintendo’s Wii console and what’s the reach of consumers with the balance board? Cammie Dunaway, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Nintendo of the Americas, gave us some info.
First, how many Wii consoles do you think have been sold?
That’s right, more than 50+ Million!
How well has the original Wii Fit been doing?
So we have a pretty good feeling that Wii Fit Plus is going to do just as well.
Here are a couple of highlights from the announcement:
- Starting in the fall, it’ll be available independently (for those who already have a balance board) and as a bundle replacing Wii Fit with new balance board purchases
- Exercise modules are improved to enable a playlist-like set-up to improve workout flow in 20, 30 or 40-minute increments (there are 6 new yoga and strength exercises)
- Customization is improved to help you focus your training
- There’s even a fun little module that enables you to weigh your dog or cat
