A Step Toward Easing New Yorkers’ Dependency On Oil;
Segway Salutes New York Legislature’s Passage of Transportation Bill

Governor Paterson Urged to Sign

BEDFORD, NH – July 1, 2008 – Segway Inc., the leader in green, personal transportation today recognized the New York Legislature for passing legislation to allow for the safe and proper use of its products on the public ways of the State of New York. The company is now urging Governor Paterson to sign the bill into law, the legislation of which the New York State Senate passed recently 49 to 13 and the State Assembly by a 105 to 27 margin.

“With gasoline prices continuing to soar above the $4 per gallon level, and the need to address greenhouse gas emissions, the time is now to sign this legislation into law,” said Jim Norrod, Segway President and CEO. “New Yorkers need alternative transportation options that can ease our dependency on oil and the Segway Personal Transporter (PT) can help fill that need.”

A recent white paper authored by Segway Inc. researchers found that when compared to the average car, a Segway PT creates 14 times less greenhouse gas (a 93 percent reduction) and is 4.5 times more energy efficient than a hybrid car. The Segway PT is battery-powered and can travel up to 24 miles on a single charge.

In addition, recent independent safety studies have concluded that the Segway PT was “safe, stable, extremely maneuverable and proper for environments which accommodate bicycles and other low speed devices” when used in accordance with the user materials.

The Segway PT is manufactured in Bedford, N.H. and is sold through a global network of authorized dealers and distributors, several of which are located in the State of New York. Today, more than 750 police, security, and military organizations use the Segway PT to reconnect with the communities they serve, and to secure airports and military bases. NYPD and several other New York police departments currently utilize the Segway PT.

The legislation, which closely mirrors laws that currently exist in forty-two other states, would define the Segway PT as an Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD) and allow use on low speed roadways, bike lanes and similar areas. Most importantly the legislation allows New York communities and counties to further regulate the Segway PT if they
deem necessary.

“I want to thank Senator (Owen) Johnson and Assemblyman (David) Gantt for their persistent support and for sponsoring the legislation and to the majority of their colleagues who voted in favor for it,” said Matt Dailida, Segway Inc.’s Director of Government Affairs. “I hope their confidence in our mission will encourage legislators in the remaining states - especially those in the neighboring states of Massachusetts and Connecticut, to act swiftly on similar legislation so that consumers in those states can also have a new choice in reducing their gasoline dependency.”

Today consumers around the world are realizing how the Segway PT can reduce the consumption of gasoline and transform their lives in the process. Individuals interested in the Segway PT are invited to learn more at www.segway.com/nogas to see video and explore what it means to own and use a Segway PT.
