SEGWAY INC. TO PURCHASE RENEWABLE ENERGY CREDITS ON BEHALF OF PARTICIPATING CUSTOMERS IN 2007
BEDFORD, N.H. April 18, 2007–In celebration of Earth Day this Sunday, April 22, Segway Inc., the leader in personal electric transportation, is introducing a program wherein it will purchase renewable energy credits to offset the electricity used by Segway® Personal Transporters (PTs) purchased this year. The objective of this program is to replace the electricity an avid Segway PT rider uses in one year to charge his or her Segway PT, estimated at 200 kilowatt hours (kWh), with electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind and geothermal sources. Anyone who purchases a Segway PT in 2007 should visit www.segway.com/green to register for renewable energy credits to be purchased on their behalf.
“Our customers have already made one significant step in minimizing the greenhouse gas emissions they generate – they’ve bought a Segway PT – one of the most energy efficient, low-emitting transportation options available today,” said Jim Norrod, chief executive officer, Segway Inc. “With this program, Segway is helping our customers take the commitment to reduce global warming even further, by purchasing renewable energy credits that will replace the energy they use to charge their Segway PTs with renewable-source electricity.”
Purchasing renewable energy credits is a way for an individual or an organization to counteract the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the production of electricity. Since the Segway PT is powered by two electric, rechargeable batteries, Segway will purchase credits that support the production of new renewable energy such as wind, solar and other non-polluting power.
At the end of each quarter Segway Inc. will purchase credits to support renewable power for each Segway PT that has been registered in the program. Both commercial and consumer customers who have purchased units in 2007 are eligible to register for the credits at www.segway.com/green. Segway will work with vendors that support new, non-polluting energy production to purchase the credits.
