Segway Inc. Growth Plans Lead to Dealer Expansion in Ten States
Innovative Company Looking To Add Dealership in First Half of 2006
BEDFORD, N.H. – March 27, 2006 – Segway Inc., developer of Segway® Smart Motion™ technology and manufacturer of the Segway Personal Transporter (PT), today announced that it has plans to expand its nationwide network of independent Segway Authorized Dealerships by at least 25 percent in 2006. Key markets for this expansion include major metropolitan areas in the states of Arizona, California Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.
“Our dealer network is our primary distribution channel, with 90 percent of our sales being conducted through dealerships,” said Jason Barton, vice president of sales, Segway Inc. “We anticipate significant sales growth in 2006 as we continue to target consumers and commercial sectors with focused sales and marketing efforts. We are seeking quality dealer partners across the U.S. to help us capitalize on that momentum.”
In 2005 Segway expanded its dealer network by 21 percent over the prior year, and anticipates exceeding that growth this year. As a part of Segway’s growing distribution network, dealers enjoy incentive-based benefits programs, territory protection, national trade advertising and marketing support, as well as other programs and systems to enhance the sales experience. There are currently 100 Segway Authorized Dealerships in the United States.
Since the Segway PT first went on sale in late 2002, the company’s average annual growth rate has exceeded 50 percent. Currently, consumers make up two-thirds of Segway’s sales volume and commercial customers account for the remaining third. Last year the police and security market was the fastest growing commercial segment for Segway. Now more than 100 police departments worldwide use Segway PTs for airport and street patrols, community policing and emergency response.
The Segway PT is an electric, self-balancing transportation device that uses “Dynamic Stabilization” technology to keep the rider upright and balanced. The device is battery powered, uses no gasoline, gives off no emissions, and can be re-charged at any conventional electrical outlet. It can travel up to 24 miles on a single charge and requires virtually no maintenance. Because of its versatility the Segway PT has attracted a diverse consumer base that includes urban commuters, recreational users and golf enthusiasts. Commercial customers include police departments, airports, resorts, tour operators, colleges and universities and warehousing facilities.
Last year Segway broadened its product line by introducing the Segway Cross-Terrain Transporter (XT) and the Segway Golf Transporter (GT). In addition, the company recently introduced four new accessory packages – Police, Commuter, Explorer and Links – that enhance the use of Segway products in specific applications.
