Introducing the new Segway® Personal Transporter: major technological advancements enhance the ride
 

On August 14th, Segway Inc. released a new line of Segway Personal Transporters (PTs) featuring breakthrough LeanSteer" technology and a wireless InfoKey " controller, innovations that make the Segway experience more intuitive than ever before.  The product line includes the versatile i2 and the cross-terrain x2 models. 

LeanSteer technology is an engineering breakthrough that allows all aspects of the Segway PT's movement to be controlled by the rider leaning in the direction he wants to go. Lean right to go right, lean left to go left.  

In addition to responding to rider movements, the Segway PT's software can differentiate between the rider's steering and changes in terrain, keeping the rider stable and comfortable while traveling over varied terrain. LeanSteer technology enables confident riding that is more natural and sporting than ever.

The new pocket-sized wireless InfoKey controller is a key and information center all in one, allowing the rider to power the Segway PT on and off, set the speed and record useful trip information.  A security function can be activated  using the InfoKey controller when the unit is parked.  If the Segway PT is disturbed while the security function is enabled, the wheels lock and the unit emits an alarm.  To view an interview with the Segway Inc. product development team explaining the design process, select your country, click see then videos.

The i2:  Minimalist design, multitude of uses

The i2 is a versatile model with a sleek new design that has the same footprint as its predecessor, the i180, and is perfect for indoor and outdoor use on varied terrain.  The Segway PT is better than ever at moving the way you want to move, whether you're gliding down the sidewalk or taking the shortest route to your destination.  With a top speed of 12.5 mph/20 kph and a range of up to 24 miles/38 km - or 480 city blocks - the i2 is an ideal commuting companion.   

The x2: Cross-terrain marvel                               

The x2 is ideal for the adventurer who will give it a workout on off-road trails and paths.  Its  all-terrain tires maneuver easily through dirt, gravel, sand or grass, and the integrated lift handles make the x2 easy to hoist in and out of a vehicle.  The x2's wider track and higher ground clearance maximizes its stability in off-pavement and industrial uses.   

A Segway PT for every need

In the fall, Segway will begin shipping six new product packages tailored to the way people use their Segway PTs: the i2 Commuter, i2 Police, i2 Cargo; the x2 Golf, x2 Police and x2 Adventure.  These packages were created with input from our customers , and combine models and accessories in a convenient ready-to-go configuration that offers savings compared with purchasing model and accessories separately.

Segway on patrol in over 150 security angencies worldwide

Police and security agencies all over the world are adopting the Segway PT as a standard for efficient community policing, airport patrol, private security, parking patrol, campus and park security.

The City of Chicago recently demonstrated its commitment to Segway PTs as law enforcement tools by signing a five-year contract with authorized dealer Segway Experience of Chicago.  The city plans to purchase more than 100 Segway PTs and associated services to augment the 100+ units already in use in Chicago EMS, Fire, Police, Airport and Emergency Management security applications. 

In Arlington, VA Sheriff Beth Arthur of the County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies are equipped with Segway PTs said, "Not only are these Deputies able to do their jobs more quickly and efficiently (on a Segway PT), but they are also reducing our department's fuel costs and vehicle pollution.  We've been able to take two patrol cars off the street and conserve the taxpayers' money.  Everything is working out very well."

International customers like the Italian Railways, Singapore Police, Ben Gurion Airport (Israel), Schiphol Airport (Netherlands), Malaga, Spain police and many more have purchased hundreds of Segway PTs to actively patrol railway stations, parks and beaches, airports and neighborhoods.

Consumer financing now being offered by many Segway dealers

Now it's even easier to buy a Segway PT!  Segway Inc. and GE Consumer Financing recently teamed up to make the GE FUNancing Card program available through its US dealer network.  Participating dealers are now able to offer the financing program to customers who can enjoy benefits such as no annual fee, low monthly payments, generous credit limits and competitive interest rates.    Many international dealers have also implemented financing programs to assist customers.  Be sure to inquire when you visit your local dealer or find out more.

Segway attends Hollywood premiere of 'An Inconvenient Truth'

On May 16th the Segway PT made an appearance on the "Green Carpet" at the premiere of Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" which addresses the serious threat of global warming.  As Hollywood's glitterati made their way down the green carpet, they paused to sign the Segway PT, well known as an emissions-free, eco-friendly  transportation alternative.  As a continuation of Segway's partnership with Participant Productions (Syriana, North Country ), the company donated the autographed Segway PT to Participant's recent eBay auction to benefit the Alliance for Climate Protection, a non-profit cause Gore helped to create.  The Segway PT was signed by 32 celebrities at the premiere, including Jessica Alba, Larry David, Sharon Stone, Garry Shandling, Rob Reiner and Al Gore, and was one of the most actively bid items in the auction.

SegwayFest to be held October 13-15, 2006 in Long Beach, California
