More power. More attitude. More options.
Three new models.

Segway Inc. introduced its new product line on March 1, 2005, featuring three new models and lithium-ion batteries that double the range of the Segway® Personal Transporter (PT). The line includes the new Segway PT i180 in Midnight Blue, Midnight Blue/Solar Yellow and Midnight Blue/Sport Red color combinations; the Segway Cross-Terrain Transporter (XT); and the Segway Golf Transporter (GT).

Segway worked with Valence Technology, Inc. to develop Saphion® lithium-ion batteries for the Segway PT i180, Segway XT and Segway GT. The new batteries are available on each of these models and deliver an impressive range of up to 24 miles on a single charge depending on terrain, riding style and payload. Saphion lithium-ion batteries are very low-maintenance and can operate at battery temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Segway XT is designed for smooth, stable riding in a wide variety of off-pavement environments. It features lithium-ion batteries, larger tires and sturdy fender frames and fenders to protect the rider from debris. The Segway GT is perfect for the avid golfer who's looking to speed up his or her game. It features a golf bag carrier, enhanced traction tires, lithium-ion batteries and a unique standby key that enables the unit to stay powered on as the rider makes his or her shot. A golfer can use the Segway GT to play up to 36 holes on one battery charge.

All of the new models will be available in late April at authorized Segway dealers.

The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa rolls out Segway GTs.
Golfers playing at the Westin Kierland Resort. For decades, golfers have been attracted to Scottsdale, Arizona, also known as the Valley of the Sun, for its almost year-round moderate climate, picturesque mountains, and desert landscape. However, even perfection needs a trick shot every once in awhile. This spring, there's a new way to play the game of golf at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa - cruising the links on a Segway® Golf Transporter (GT).

The Westin Kierland has been evaluating the Segway PT on its links during the last month and will upgrade their fleet to Segway GTs as of this April, when they plan to begin renting eight Segway GTs to their golf clientele.

"The resort is investing in this technology to reinvigorate travelers' appetites for the game," said J. Bruce Lange, general manager of The Westin Kierland, which opened in November 2002. "The Segway GT brings a new element to the golf experience. There's a financial upside as well. We've found that use of the Segway GT can decrease playing time by 30 percent, which will eventually turn into earnings through increased rounds."
With their low-impact on fairways and greens, especially on days when it's cart-path only, Segway GTs also bring relief to golf course superintendents. Play delays on busy days are also minimized.

Golf course designer Scott Miller was one of the first to play 18 holes at Kierland Golf Club, a course that he designed. "It was a great experience. While I prefer to walk courses versus driving carts, the Segway GT was a great alternative. One-person travel allows for more concentration. The pace of play was definitely quicker."

The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa is located in Scottsdale, Arizona. For more information, please visit their website at www.kierlandresort.com.

A massive glimpse into our history.
Massive ChangeEver wanted to catch a glimpse of Segway Inc.'s early design history? Now you can through Massive Change - The Future of Global Design (www.massivechange.com). This exhibit by Bruce Mau Design and the Institute without Boundaries was commissioned and organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery in October, 2004. Segway was asked to participate in this amazing exhibit, which showcases the Segway PT in the transportation section.

Putting together Segway Inc.'s contribution wasn't as easy as you might think. Back in August 2004, representatives from Bruce Mau Design came to Segway and requested prototypes, design iterations of fenders, handlebars and anything else we had. While Segway houses world-class engineers, they are not museum curators or historians! Luckily, however, they are pack-rats. After hours in the bowels of an Old Mill Yard building in Manchester, we came up with some very exciting things. Some of the items featured in the exhibit are one and only originals.

This exhibit gives you a bird's eye view of Segway Inc.'s early design history, and features five early prototypes as well as a progression of handlebar and wheel designs. Doug Field, Segway Inc.'s Chief Technology Officer, provided the commentary for the exhibit, describing why some designs were approved and why some did not make it to production.

The exhibit is on tour and has recently moved to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto until May 29, 2005. Future 2005 venues and dates are not finalized, but the exhibit will travel to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2006. Each museum has also had use of a Segway PT at the exhibit, and they all agree that it's the hit of the show!
