Concept Centaur rears its head and wins a TIME award.
From time to time Segway's product development team devotes days, or even weeks, to creating new product concepts with the goal of finding a prince among frogs. It's a product exploration process they call "frog kissing." During this time, engineers and designers are encouraged to use any available materials in a very short time frame to prove a concept will work.

Concept CentaurRecently, the product development team demonstrated that Concept Centaur was a prince—a concept that passed this initial feasibility test, but is not yet ready to become a product. Concept Centaur demonstrates Segway's continued commitment to breakthrough innovation and the innumerable possibilities for the future of personal transportation.

Concept Centaur combines proprietary dynamic stabilization technology with advanced propulsion and suspension systems, and an intuitive user interface to create a unique four-wheel device that is easily controllable on two or four wheels. Its full suspension and aggressive rider positioning provide an exhilarating ride for one or two people while maintaining control over a variety of terrain. Its rugged performance, zero emissions, and quiet operation make it a good low-impact way to explore the world. Its power and versatility make it suitable for a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational and commercial applications.

TIME MagazineThe innovative Concept Centaur has already won recognition from TIME as one of the Coolest Inventions of 2004 (in the November 29, 2004 issue). See what all the buzz is about and watch a video of Concept Centaur in motion.

America at 10 mph
team members complete their cross-country journey.

10 mph team Josh Caldwell, of Denver, Col., led the America at 10 mph team that traveled from Seattle to Bedford, New Hampshire aboard a Segway PT i Series. Following close behind in a Jeep Grand Cherokee were America at 10 mph members Hunter Weeks, Gannon Weeks, Alon Waisman and Rose Kontak. Hunter Weeks also rode along with Josh, but he spent most of his time filming hours of footage they'll turn into a documentary about the people they met and the experiences they had along the way. They ended their cross-country journey in Boston, Mass. on November 16, but made a jaunt on November 18 up to Segway's headquarters in Bedford for a special company-sponsored reception.

The 10 MPH teamAbout 60 Segway PT riders greeted the team when they arrived in Bedford. Owners, enthusiasts and employees from the company, as well as dozens of others, came out to celebrate the team's achievement! Segway also provided the team with three new Segway HTs, one especially designed for the occasion and marked by a flag motif on each of its fenders. Segway also offered to refurbish the two Segway PT i Series machines the team used to cross the country. The reception also featured remarks from all five members of the America at 10 mph group, as well as from the Segway PT's inventor Dean Kamen, Segway's Chief Technology Officer Doug Field, and Vice President of Marketing, Klee Kleber.

Segway's regulatory team
continues its successful efforts.

The Segway regulatory team continues to work hard on behalf of Segway PT owners and enthusiasts throughout the country. You may not know, but the Segway PT is often referred to as an Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD) in legislation. Severe restrictions and outright bans continue to attack the motor scooter and pocket bike industry; these restrictions have also threatened EPAMDs. In Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City and the State of Massachusetts, the regulatory team has successfully worked to exempt the Segway PT from such regulations. Segway's regulatory team will continue to fight efforts to classify and regulate the Segway PT as a motor scooter. For 2005, the regulatory team will focus on passing EPAMD laws in Colorado, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. As always, Segway's regulatory team appreciates owners' involvement in these efforts.

You asked for extended range...
On November 4, 2004, Segway announced a joint technology development program with Valence Technology, Inc., the manufacturer of Saphion® -- the only safe, large format Lithium-ion rechargeable battery technology. The program's focus is to develop long-range battery packs for the Segway PT. As part of the joint technology program, Valence Technology, Inc. is developing custom battery packs to address long-range applications to enhance Segway's product line. The battery packs use Saphion, Valence's proprietary, safe and high performance, Phosphate-based Lithium-ion technology.

Extended range battery packs are expected to be available in 2005 for the Segway PT i Series models. A software upgrade will make the batteries compatible with all previously released i Series models, including the i167 and i170, as well as with Segway's off-board charger.
