As you might imagine, it has been an exciting time since the much-anticipated
launch of the Segway Personal Transporter (PT). While we appreciate
the worldwide attention and support, we're anxious to step away from the
limelight and start focusing on the work in front of uscreating an enterprise
solution that makes workers more effective and businesses more productive.
We do, however, want to take a moment to thank you for your interest.
Due to the foresight and enthusiasm of visionary people like you, the
launch of the Segway PT represented one of the most highly covered product
launches ever. Those who have had the opportunity to ride the Segway HTmembers
of the press, manufacturing, postal and EMS workers, and business leaders
around the worldhave confirmed our belief that the Segway PT really does
have the potential to change the way we work.

For
people who study productivity and efficiency, there are few measures of
success better known than General Electric's Six Sigma methodology (Press
release). When GE Plastics conducted a first round of feasibility
testing using its Six Sigma and Behavior Based Safety techniques, we knew
this would be an important milestone for Segway.
Indoor and outdoor tests, which were conducted with maintenance technicians,
environmental testers, emergency response workers, and security personnel,
revealed "potential double digit productivity gains, showed improvement
in multiple worker processes, and have generated additional thoughts on
how the Segway PT can make a positive impact on the way we do business,"
according to Gary Powell, Vice President Global Manufacturing for GE Plastics.
Encouraged by those results, GE recently purchased 10 machines for a
second round of more extensive testing to be conducted at three of the
company's largest facilities. The trials, scheduled to begin in June 2002,
and expected to last four to eight weeks, will again use six sigma and
Behavior Based Safety methodologies to assess additional applications
of the device and investigate ways to improve existing processes and better
protect GE employees and assets by leveraging the benefits of the Segway
PT.

In late April, three Atlanta-based companies and organizations purchased
several Segway HTs, the first machines to be deployed in public settings.
The Central Atlanta Progress Ambassador Force and the Atlanta Regional
Commission began using Segway PTs to travel in and around the Atlanta
metro area, and Georgia Power purchased two machines for use by maintenance
personnel, with plans to conduct feasibility testing for reading electric
meters (Press
release). According to Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, "Atlanta
is the perfect city to pilot the Segway Personal Transporter. It fits right
into our effort to employ alternative means of transportation to help
us achieve cleaner, more livable communities in the future." In addition,
the Atlanta Police Department recently joined a growing number of law
enforcement agencies testing Segway HTs. Look for the results in upcoming
issues.

GE wasn't the only company to experience the benefits of the Segway PT
firsthand. In a highly publicized test, the Tampa, FL post office (Press
release) put several of its mail carriers on Segway HTs, generating
a great deal of interest and the approval of Tampa Postmaster Rich Rome
who pronounced he was "very pleased" with the initial test results.
In addition, EMT workers at this year's Boston Marathon recently climbed
aboard Segway PTs to provide a wide range of event support functions.
The machines were equipped with sirens, warning lights, and a medical
bag large enough to hold respiratory equipment and defibrillators. On
May 1, the National Park Service announced that it would begin testing
Segway PTs in the field. Look for the results of this and other tests
in the coming months.
By accessing our Web site's Return On Investment calculator, you can
now estimate how much more productive Segway PTs can make your company.
Just enter some simple data and the ROI calculator will estimate one component
of the annual savings you could realize. The calculator can be found at

One of the guiding principles behind the Segway PT is a constant drive
toward innovation in science and engineering. To help inspire tomorrow's
innovators, Dean Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition
of Science and Technology) over 10 years ago. In support of FIRST's efforts,
Segway, in partnership with Amazon.com, recently auctioned off three FIRST
Edition Segway HTs. The auction drew over 500 bids from around the U.S.,
raising over $350,000 for this non-profit organization. To learn more
about FIRST, visit their Web site at www.usfirst.org.

Even for us, it's sometimes hard to believe we've accomplished so much
in such a short time, but we're far from done. We are still driven by
the same entrepreneurial enthusiasm and passion that has been burning
since we first started working with the Segway technology, and we continue
to work hard to provide our current and future customers, with the most
attentive service possible. We appreciate the fact that so many of you
have registered and expressed an interest in testing or purchasing Segway
HTs, and we want to thank you for the patience you have shown as we try
to connect with everyone individually. We look forward to speaking with
you in the very near future.
